CAVENDISH UNIVERSITY MEDICAL GRADUATES WELCOMED BY ZAMBIA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

The Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) inducted 15 Cavendish University MBChB graduates into the medical profession at an induction ceremony held at Cavendish University’s Longacres Campus.


Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Bright Makenzih, ZMA Vice President, stressed that professionalism is paramount in medical practice. He emphasized upholding integrity, compassion, respect, and accountability, recognizing patients entrust their lives to doctors. Doctors’ conduct, both in and out of the hospital, should reflect the dignity of medicine, he added. Dr. Makenzih stressed that these values are non-negotiable and form the essence of the medical profession.


Leading the Induction ceremony, the ZMA Secretary General – Dr. Innocent Ngwira, advised the newly inducted medical professionals that their medical degree offers diverse career opportunities beyond clinical practice. They can pursue paths such as academia, research, or specialization, emphasizing that a medical degree provides versatility and security in career choices.


Dr. Rachel Velu, Dean of the School of Medicine at Cavendish University, emphasized that medicine is an art that must be practiced within the boundaries of the law and ethical standards. She urged the graduates to lead with wisdom, love, and integrity, noting that the world awaits their skilled and compassionate service, as trained by Cavendish University.


Further addressing, The HPCZ Representative – Mr. Komani Lungu, advised the inductees to be vigilant about medical legal matters. He emphasized that their practice should be guided by transparency, informed consent, patient rights, and professional boundaries. Mr. Lungu stressed the importance of maintaining accurate records, communicating effectively, and seeking guidance when needed.


Mr. Reginald Rainey, Executive Director of Cavendish University, expressed gratitude to the School of Medicine faculty and staff for their dedication to excellence in training the graduates. He also thanked parents and well-wishers for their unwavering support and confidence in the university. Mr. Rainey urged the new doctors to leverage their skills to compete globally.


Dr. Innocent Ngwira, ZMA Secretary General, invited the ZMA Vice President to lead the oath recitation, marking the doctors’ commitment to their profession.


The Induction ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Dr. Monday Sichula, ZMA Ethics and Professional Conduct Board Chairperson, Mrs. Chalwa Mutere, Cavendish University Dean of students, and Ms. Bertha Phiri, Cavendish University Academic Registrar.
