On 7th April, 2026, The Ministry of Health in collaboration with World Health Organization commemorated World Health Day 2026 with the theme “Together for Quality Health: Informed by Science.” The ceremony was held at the Mulungushi International Conference Center (MICC).
Officiating the celebrations was the Honorable Minister, Dr. Alex Katakwe, accompanied by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary -Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi.

The Zambia Medical Association was represented by ZMA delegation led by ZMA President – Dr. Masiku Phiri, alongside Treasurer – Dr. Naluca Mwendaweli, ZMA Ethics and Professional Conduct Board Chairperson – Dr. Monday Sichula and Resident Doctors Association of Zambia President (RDAZ) – Dr. Paul K. Chibwe.

The Minister of Health delivered an insightful speech emphasizing a commitment to evidence-based, scientific practices in healthcare delivery. The Honorable Minister highlighted the importance of collaboration across sectors, from policymakers and health workers to communities and private partners, in achieving quality health outcomes.

The Honorable minister further stated that collaborations span various government ministries (Education, Technology, Agriculture), academia, and private sector partners, promoting research, innovation, and improved health service delivery. The introduction of digital health tools and timely vaccinations, such as the cholera vaccine to academic institutions, illustrates this synergistic effort.

The Minister acknowledged remaining challenges, including health inequities, workforce shortages, and misinformation, underscoring a need for continuous investment in training, research, and community engagement. Hon. Dr. Katakwe appealed to all stakeholders to commit to science-driven quality healthcare accessible to all Zambians and concluded with a strong rallying message to the nation to embrace science and collaboration as the foundation for quality healthcare for all Zambians.
The World Health Day commemoration is an opportunity for reflection, learning, sharing, with a program including presentations, discussions, and exhibitions showcasing innovations and practical solutions focused on health system strengthening.
