Cholera thrives where poor sanitation, unsafe water, and poor hygiene create conditions for its spread. Anyone exposed to contaminated food or water can become infected.
The real problem is the neglect of basic hygiene and sanitation practices. If you eat carelessly, drink unsafe water, ignore handwashing, and tolerate filthy surroundings, you are inviting cholera into your life. Stop living carelessly and start taking hygiene seriously!
Keeping yourself and your community clean is not optional; it is a responsibility that can save lives. Cholera is preventable, but only if we stop giving it room to thrive.
3 Cs for the Prevention of cholera:
1. Clean and Safe Water
Drink and use water that is boiled for a full rolling minute or treated with chlorine. Store drinking water in a clean, covered container with a small opening or spout, and pour it out rather than dipping cups inside.
2. Clean Hands:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and safe water especially before, during, and after preparing food, before eating, and after using the toilet or changing the babies nappies. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
3. Early Care:
Seek medical attention immediately at the nearest health facility or cholera treatment center at the very first signs of watery diarrhea or vomiting, even before severe dehydration sets in. Administer oral re-hydration solution (ORS) or a clean sugar-salt solution right away while heading to care.
