Today, the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) officially inducted and cloaked 66 Medical Doctors from Texila American University Zambia into the medical profession. The prestigious ceremony was held at Cheryl Gardens, Lilayi, in Lusaka.

This milestone marks not just the end of an academic journey, but the beginning of service to society as proud graduates of Texila American University. The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Dr. Innocent Ngwira, Secretary General of ZMA, representing Dr. Masiku Phiri, President of the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA); Dr. Mwila Evelyn Mulenga, Chairperson, Medical Education and Research Board – ZMA, Dr. Godfrey Phiri, representing the Guest of Honour, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, Permanent Secretary – Technical Services at the Ministry of Health Zambia(MOH); Vice Chancellor Dr. Balamurugan Easwaran; Brig. Speaking on behalf of ZMA President Dr. Masiku Phiri, ZMA Secretary General Dr. Innocent Ngwira welcomed the inductees into the Zambia Medical Association. He reminded them that today’s ceremony is not only a celebration of their achievements, but also a solemn reminder of the responsibilities they now bear as custodians of health and life. He emphasized that medicine is not merely a career, but a noble calling grounded in integrity, compassion, humility, and lifelong learning. Dr. Ngwira underscored the importance of service to humanity, continuous professional development, and ethical responsibility, while encouraging the inductees to actively contribute to health systems, medical research, education, and national development.

Speaking on behalf of the Guest of Honour, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, Dr. Godfrey Phiri congratulated the 66 newly inducted doctors, reminding them that today marks not just the end of their academic journey, but the beginning of a life of service and responsibility as custodians of health and life. He urged the new doctors not to measure success solely by service in large hospitals, but by their willingness to serve in district hospitals, rural health centres, and community outreaches where the need is greatest. He further emphasized that while Zambia continues to invest in digital health systems such as SmartCare, EHR, and telemedicine, technology must remain as a tool to enhance care and should never replace the human connection between doctor and patient.

In his address, Brig. Gen. Prof. Lawson Simapuka, Executive Director of the National Forensic Authority, highlighted the integration of medicine with forensic science and that accurate medical documentation, ethical conduct, and scientific rigor are critical to strengthening national health systems. He closed with a call for graduates to uphold the dignity of their profession, prioritize patient well-being, and explore emerging fields that contribute to justice and healthcare advancement.

The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Balamurugan Easwaran, emphasized the values of lifelong learning, integrity, and compassion, noting that academic achievement is not an end in itself, but a gateway to greater professional responsibility, one that extends beyond clinical knowledge to uphold human dignity and ethical service. He further congratulated the inductees and warmly welcomed them into the fraternity of Texila American University graduates.

Before leading the recitation of the oath, a powerful symbol of dedication to the noble profession of medicine, the Zambia Medical Association Secretary General, Dr. Ngwira reminded the inductees that becoming a doctor is an honour that has commanded respect throughout history, but one that must be practiced with ethics at its core. He emphasized that a doctor should never be stranded or feel hopeless after graduation, as medicine offers a wide and open career path. On the 30th of September, 2026, the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) formally inducted 70 MBChB graduates from Cavendish University Zambia into the medical profession during a ceremony held at the university’s Longacres Campus.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Masiku Phiri, ZMA President, conveyed a profound and motivational message: entering the medical profession is stepping into a role laden with responsibility, mentorship, and community support. Leadership in medicine is not about power but about serving and guiding others while staying humble and grateful for those who have supported you.

Dr. Phiri called upon the inductees to embrace innovation, technology, including artificial intelligence, and new healthcare paradigms to meet evolving patient expectations. The future of healthcare in Africa took centre stage in Lusaka as Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) President, Dr Masiku Phiri, addressed the 11th Annual Scientific Conference of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP), held from 17–20 September 2026 at Ciela Resort, Lusaka, Zambia.

The conference was graced by the Honourable Minister of Health, Prof. Roma Chilengi, Dr Masiku Phiri and the President of the Zambia College of Physicians, Dr. Chanda M. Duncan who were joined by physicians, researchers, medical educators, policymakers, trainees and other healthcare professionals from across the region.

The conference was held under the theme: ”Augmenting Clinical Excellence: Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation to Strengthen Evidence-Based Practice, Training, and Equitable Care in Africa.”

Delivering his keynote address as Guest of Honour, the Honourable Minister of Health, Prof. Roma Chilengi, offered a compelling vision for Africa’s healthcare future. He stated that artificial intelligence and digital innovation should act as powerful allies in elevating clinical excellence, rather than as substitutes for professional judgment. He strongly advocated for a human-centered approach that balances technological advancement with compassion, ethics, and equity, while affirming the importance of local ownership, evidence generation, and collaboration. He noted that Zambia’s digital health initiatives exemplify these principles in action.

The Honourable Minister stated that realizing a healthier, more equitable, and resilient African healthcare system depends on embracing innovation responsibly, investing in human capacity, and forging partnerships across sectors. He suggested next steps that include continued investment in digital governance, ethical frameworks, specialist training, and inclusive policies that keep patients firmly at the centre of healthcare transformation.

Speaking at the conference, the President of the Zambia College of Physicians, Dr. Chanda M. Duncan, highlighted the crucial role that digital technologies and evidence-based practices play in transforming healthcare across East and Southern Africa. He stated that despite impressive advances in data generation, a pressing challenge remains in translating this data into effective clinical practice. He advocated for building strong platforms, governance frameworks, and sustainable partnerships that prioritize equitable access and continuous education for collaborative, compassionate, and data-driven solutions that improve healthcare outcomes.

In his address, Dr Masiku Phiri highlighted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation in healthcare. He noted that AI should support physicians by strengthening clinical judgement, improving diagnosis, supporting research and training, expanding access to medical knowledge and improving patient care.

He also spoke about the importance of ensuring that AI technologies are developed and used with consideration for African populations, healthcare systems and local needs. Key issues highlighted included patient confidentiality, autonomy, trust, ethical safeguards and equitable access to digital healthcare.

Dr Phiri emphasized the role of physicians in the development and governance of healthcare technologies, noting that doctors should be involved not only as users, but also as researchers, educators, evaluators and leaders.

He further highlighted the need for stronger African research, African data and African-led innovation, as well as increased collaboration among countries and institutions across the region.

A central message of the address was that the patient must remain at the center of healthcare innovation. Digital technology has the potential to improve access to specialist care, support healthcare professionals and strengthen services, particularly for people in rural and underserved communities.

Dr Phiri also noted that successful digital transformation requires investment in infrastructure, connectivity and the healthcare workforce, together with appropriate governance and ethical standards.

The conference provided an important platform for sharing scientific knowledge, strengthening professional networks and exploring opportunities for research, medical education, innovation and improved healthcare delivery across the region.

ZMA Inducts 49 Eden University Graduands into the Medical Profession

The Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) has inducted 49 medical graduands from Eden University into the medical profession, marking the second induction ceremony of the Eden University School of Medicine.

The ceremony brought together university management, faculty, parents and guardians, the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ), ZMA, and other stakeholders to celebrate this important milestone in the lives of the graduating class of 2026.

Speaking at the ceremony, ZMA President, Dr. Masiku Phiri, congratulated the newly inducted doctors and reaffirmed ZMA’s commitment to supporting young medical professionals as they begin their careers.

Dr. Phiri encouraged the doctors to embrace continuous learning, research, technology and artificial intelligence, while remaining grounded in the values of compassion, professionalism and quality patient care. He reminded them that doctors are leaders not only in hospitals and communities, but also at policy level, and encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to strengthening Zambia’s health system.

The ZMA Secretary-General, Dr. Innocent Ngwira, also encouraged the new doctors to uphold professionalism in their use of social media and invited them to join ZMA to benefit from the Association’s professional development, networking, advocacy and other membership opportunities.

On 7^th April, 2026, The Ministry of Health in collaboration with World Health Organization commemorated World Health Day 2026 with the theme “Together for Quality Health: Informed by Science.” The ceremony was held at the Mulungushi International Conference Center (MICC).

Officiating the celebrations was the Honorable Minister, Dr. Alex Katakwe, accompanied by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary -Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi.

The Zambia Medical Association was represented by ZMA delegation led by ZMA President – Dr. Masiku Phiri, alongside Treasurer – Dr. Naluca Mwendaweli, ZMA Ethics and Professional Conduct Board Chairperson – Dr. Monday Sichula and Resident Doctors Association of Zambia President (RDAZ) – Dr. Paul K. Prof. Lawson Simapuka the Executive Director of the National Forensic Authority articulated that the accuracy of medical documentation, ethical conduct and scientific rigor all play a crucial role in strengthening our national health systems. He urged the inductees to inculcate discipline and precision in their practice.

The Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) inducted and cloaked 160 Medical Doctors into the medical profession on the 30th of October, 2025. The Induction was held at the Mulungushi University, Great North Road Campus in Kabwe.

A proud moment for all as we celebrated the future of healthcare, with distinguished guests; The Guest of Honor at the ceremony, Acting Permanent Secretary – Central Province, Dr. Elijah Mutoloki Munachonga. Also present were the Deputy Registrar for Technical Services – Health Professions Council of Zambia – HPCZ, Dr. Muhumpu Kafwamfwa, The Deputy Vice Chancellor Innovation and Research – Mulungushi University, Professor Chansa Chomba, The Senior Medical Superintendent – Livingstone UTH, Dr. Kaseya O.R Chiyenu, and The Dean School of Medicine and Health Sciences – Mulungushi University, Dr. Miyoba H. Michelo and Many others.

Speaking at the ceremony, The Zambia Medical Association President, Dr. Masiku Phiri urged the inductees to uphold integrity and exemplary conduct beyond the workplace, as their professional standing places, they are at the pinnacle of societal expectation and demands behavior that reflects the dignity of the medical profession.

Additionally, he gave a huge thank you to the Mulungushi University School of Medicine(SOM) for producing this newly qualified cohort of medical doctors. Dr. Phiri concluded by wishing the new cohort of inducted Doctors the very best in their medical practice Journey.
