THE ZMA MID-CAREER OUTSTANDING AWARD- DR. NYUMA MBEWE-SIMUKOKO

by Kenani Mwape

This award is given to a medical doctor who has distinguished themselves in the arena of medical academia. They have in the practice of medicine made significant contribution to the profession of medicine as a science. Because of their work, medicine in general and the Zambia Medical Association in particular have been thrown into a positive light with practices that will inform the profession for years to come.

Dr. Nyuma Mbewe –Simukoko is an Infectious Disease Champion whose effort was recently recognized during the COVID-19 fight. She was at the time, a resident under the mentorship of universally trained mentors.

During the waves of the pandemic, she had to don several hats from primary prevention efforts, clinical care and national guideline development.

This experience rekindled her love for research, mentorship, and educational systems. She has been involved in the reevaluation of the Infectious Disease program and her successes have been mirrored by a skewed rise in women enrolled and has also given her opportunities to present groundbreaking research at global platforms such as the recently ended International Aids Conference.

Currently, she serves as a mentor for the Young Emerging Scientists and the Medical Women Association of Zambia mentorship programs which helps students develop a love for research. Professionally, she is the COVID 19 Case Management Specialist at the Zambia National Public Health Institute. And has been involved in mentorship in Advanced HIV Disease in the provinces, as well as management of pediatric patients.

Dr. Mbewe’s life goal is to develop a peer-derived network of researchers offering international solutions to locally common problems such as HIV, TB and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases.

This Award was sponsored by Onelife Assurance Zambia. A huge congratulations to Dr. Nyuma Mbewe-Simukoko.!
