Registration of death, including the determination and recording of death causes and producing accurate mortality statistics is an essential component of a healthcare system. Timely and accurate data collection on the number of deaths by location, age, sex, and the causes of death are important for monitoring health-related targets of the SDGs at global, regional, and national levels.

According to the recent SCORE (Survey, Count, Optimize, Review and Enable) shows that only 1 country in Africa had the capacity to accurately document causes of death. 30 out of 47 countries (64%) had no sustainable capacity to correctly document these vital statistics.

In addressing this gap, the ZAMBIA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION with support from Ndola Teaching Hospital Official , Zambia Flying Doctor Service and Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital – ADCH is conducting a Medical Certification of the Cause of Death (#MCCD) training for medical doctors in Ndola.

The training was officially opened by the Copperbelt Provincial Health Director – Dr C. Mwinuna, ZMA President- Dr K. Tolopu, NTH – Head Clinical Care – Dr Funjika on Monday 18th March 2024.

The training is being facilitated by officers from the Office of the State Forensic Pathologist led by Dr L. Mucheleng’anga.

Dr Mwinuna underscored the critical importance of training all health staff in completing the #MCCD as it provides important health information. ZMA President thanked the management of ZFD, NTH for proactively mobilizing resources for the training and further stated that ZMA is looking for partners to support the full scale implementation of this training across the country.
