On the 30th of September, 2026, the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) formally inducted 70 MBChB graduates from Cavendish University Zambia into the medical profession during a ceremony held at the university’s Longacres Campus.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Masiku Phiri, ZMA President, conveyed a profound and motivational message: entering the medical profession is stepping into a role laden with responsibility, mentorship, and community support. Leadership in medicine is not about power but about serving and guiding others while staying humble and grateful for those who have supported you.
Dr. Phiri called upon the inductees to embrace innovation, technology, including artificial intelligence, and new healthcare paradigms to meet evolving patient expectations. He emphasized that to meet the demands of informed patients and improve healthcare outcomes, going forward, doctors should prioritize continuous learning and unity of purpose to effectively serve their communities.

Leading the Induction ceremony, the ZMA Secretary General, Dr. Innocent Ngwira, stated the importance of upholding the dignity, ethics, and professionalism of the medical profession. He emphasized the value of mentorship, ethical practice, and maintaining respect both personally and within society, encouraging them to embody the role of a respected physician and take responsibility for their conduct and career path.

Further addressing, The Health Professions Council of Zambia – HPCZ Representative, Mr. Komani Lungu, equipped the inductees with knowledge on regulatory requirements, encouraged them towards entrepreneurial ambitions, and reminded them that professional challenges can be overcome through mentorship and ethical vigilance. He emphasized that new practitioners should prioritize compliance, embrace lifelong learning, and actively engage with the Council to uphold high standards in protecting public health. He closed off the address with an inspiring call to serve with pride and humility, fostering a future of excellence and meaningful patient impact.

Before inviting the ZMA President, Dr. Phiri to lead the oath-taking ceremony which marks the graduates’ formal commitment to the medical profession, Dr. Innocent Ngwira spoke on the importance of upholding professionalism in medicine, both publicly and privately. He advocated for active participation by joining the Zambia Medical Association and specialization as key to a fulfilling medical career.

Cavendish University Executive Director, Mr. Reginald Rainey, commended the School of Medicine faculty and staff for their dedication to excellence in training the graduates. He also expressed gratitude to the parents and well-wishers for their unwavering support and confidence in the university, and urged the new doctors to leverage their skills to compete on a global stage.

Also speaking at the induction, Dr. Rachel Velu, Cavendish University Deputy Vice Chancellor stressed that graduates should carry their alma mater’s values proudly, collaborate effectively, and serve humanity with kindness and honesty by embracing these principles daily and leveraging available support networks to thrive both professionally and personally.

The Induction ceremony was attended by notable figures, including, Dr. Mzaza Nthele, Cavendish University School of Medicine Dean, Mrs. Chalwa Mutere, Cavendish University Dean of students, and Mrs Maureen Mulenga Chishimba, NMCZ Senior inspector.
