The Zambia Medical Association is thrilled to announce that Zambia was represented at this year’s American Neurological Association (ANA) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, USA.

Zambia is one of four African countries who are recipients of Small Pilot Research Grants from the ANA’s Global Neurology Presidential Initiative. These Pilot Grants will help fund research projects of early career neurologists and residents in Zambia, Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria.
Dr. Melody Asukile, treasurer of the Neurological Association of Zambia (NAZ) accepted the award on behalf of NAZ.

The Zambia Medical Association will be hosting its 59th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting from 17th to 19th August,2023 at Avani Victoria Falls Resort in Livingstone.
The theme is ‘Strengthening Health Systems by leveraging digital health to address emerging and existing health threats’.

As part of its preparation to this important event,ZMA held a media breakfast at the Urban Hotel in Lusaka.The prelaunch was meant to showcase a number of activities expected to take place and unveiled its sponsors/partners.

An All Female Landmark Medical Milestone!

ZMA wishes to announce to the nation and in the same vein congratulate the first four indigenously trained Diagnostic Radiologist in the country. This is an all female powered team!
A diagnostic radiologist is a doctor who treats medical conditions through specialised imagings and interventional radiological procedures.
This is a plus to a female representation and a testament that females can achieve anything they put their mind and brain to.

A Landmark Medical Feat for Zambia!

ZMA wishes to congratulate Zambia’s first indigenously trained Neurosurgeons (Brain surgeons). This is a landmark development in the growth of the medical fraternity in Zambia and the Subregion.

Neurosurgery is a surgical discipline that tackles complex brain and Spinal cord conditions, whose operations are long and can be as long as 20hrs.Zambians will now have an easy access to this highly specialised Neurosurgical service locally.
Congratulations Dr. Ray Hazunga, Dr. Peter Mushenya, Dr. Anorld Bhebhe, Dr. Wilmot Sinyangwe,Dr. Brian Mwila and Dr. Aaron Munkondya.

A big win for Zambia! 🇿🇲

The Zambia Medical Association has today, 24th May, 2023 held a press briefing and launched The ZMA Care for Care Givers Medical Scheme.
The press briefing focused on securing the country’s health system through a healthy workforce .

The background was on the global community just coming out of a debilitating COVID-19 pandemic which disrupted:

1. Healthcare;the way we know it
2. Changed the way we interacted as a people as livelihoods were heavily disrupted.
3. Travel,commerce and medical supply chains.

Association President, Dr . Crispin Moyo appealed to the media as a stakeholder to publish accurate and verified information to educate and inform, noting that negative reporting has the potential to dissuade the ordinary Zambians from accessing conventional healthcare from public facilities while also posing heightened risk to the well being of healthcare workers by way of leaving them vulnerable to verbal and physical abuse.

The Executive took this opportunity to launch the ZMA Care for Care Givers (ZMA C4C) Medical scheme in partnership with Madison Health & Risk Management Limited. In attendance was Managing Director Madison Health & Risk -Silo Mubiana and Assistant Manager – Business Development
Madison Health & Risk Management-Ms Linda Chisenga.

The ‘ ZMA C4C ‘ initiative is aimed at providing comprehensive health care cover to Medical Doctors and their immediate families in times of need, a milestone that has been work in progress for 7 years.

We therefore invite ZMA members from all corners and generations to sign up for this initiative that will help avert health emergencies that they are not immune to by virtue of being Medical Doctors while also mitigating catastrophic expenditure on healthcare needs for themselves and their immediate lives.

ZMA is one of the recipients of US $80,000 grant which is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project by Prudential Zambia. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a ripple impact on the lives of many and will continue to change the narrative of many. 

ZMA last year trained 45 master trainers under the Care for Care givers program who have since gone on to train over 400 more health care workers in basic mental health first aid. Since then, the trained first aiders have serviced over 1500 lives with mental health support both in their personal lives and their professional service.

This year’s grant will enable ZMA to further strengthen the Care for health care workers.

The event held on 31^st January, 2023 was graced by the Assistant Director Community Health, Dr. Sylvia Chila Simwanza.

Zambia Medical Association President, Dr. Crispin Moyo echoed the concern of, “Who takes care of health care workers?” 

Dr. Moyo thanked Prudential Zambia for the kind gesture. He shared how Prudential’s support has helped take care of health care workers indicating that over 1500 people have benefited from this support with over 400 health care workers now certified Mental Health care first aiders around the country. “Through this gesture, we will be able to train more of our members who are in the far to reach places.” 

The project is evidence based and coordinated by Public Health Chairperson Dr. Dalal Naeem who is grateful for the financial support from Prudential. Dr Dalal has also commended the technical support rendered by the Zambia National Public Health Institute and the Ministry of Health. The project outputs have been a success because of the professional zeal from the ZMA members, and the leadership from key institutions as ZNPHI and MoH.
