Zambia Medical Association is aware of the impact artists have in influencing citizens in the country when it comes to sensitization of different aspects of health related issues. The 2022 ZMA Artist Award recipient is James Sakala. ZMA takes keen interest in some of his songs, among them; #Iyo released in 2021 under Ukani Manje and #Ndeshilila released in 2019 under which address mental health issues currently on the rise and affecting anyone from all walks of life.
James Sakala continues to sensitize citizens and the communities on how to take mental health seriously and be supportive towards one another. Congratulations to him!
The Zambia Medical Association recognizes the vital role of the media plays in disseminating information to the public particularly in the Associations area of interest- Health. It is based on this that every year, ZMA awards individuals who have been exceptional in the media fraternity for their consistent and effective contribution to the association.

This Award celebrates a young doctor who has been in practice for less than 5 years in which he/she has shown distinguished service in the practice of modern Medicine. The individual would have shown exceptional and outstanding Medical Professionalism, Ethical Conduct, innovation and/or commitment to practice of medicine within the available resources.
DR. NICHOLAS SAKALA
Dr. Nicholas Sakala completed his Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery(MBChB) at Copperbelt University in 2017. In the same year, he was posted to Mansa General hospital as Junior Resident Medical Officer (JRMO) where he completed his internship in 2019. Thereafter, he served as Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO ) at the hospital before being sent to Milenge where he worked as Medical officer in Charge(MOIC) at Milenge district Hospital.
Dr. Sakala is currently serving as the District Health Director(DHD) for Lunga District in Luapula Province. Lunga district is amongst the new districts that were created in 2012, the only mode of transport is water(Marine) transport, it has several islands and currently uses solar energy. Dr. Sakala through his work has demonstrated to the people Lunga that quality service is not just about available resources but about men committed to giving optimal care to the community.

THE ZMA MID-CAREER OUTSTANDING AWARD- DR. NYUMA MBEWE-SIMUKOKO
This award is given to a medical doctor who has distinguished themselves in the arena of medical academia. They have in the practice of medicine made significant contribution to the profession of medicine as a science. Because of their work, medicine in general and the Zambia Medical Association in particular have been thrown into a positive light with practices that will inform the profession for years to come.
Dr. Nyuma Mbewe –Simukoko is an Infectious Disease Champion whose effort was recently recognized during the COVID-19 fight. She was at the time, a resident under the mentorship of universally trained mentors.
During the waves of the pandemic, she had to don several hats from primary prevention efforts, clinical care and national guideline development.
This experience rekindled her love for research, mentorship, and educational systems. She has been involved in the reevaluation of the Infectious Disease program and her successes have been mirrored by a skewed rise in women enrolled and has also given her opportunities to present groundbreaking research at global platforms such as the recently ended International Aids Conference.
Currently, she serves as a mentor for the Young Emerging Scientists and the Medical Women Association of Zambia mentorship programs which helps students develop a love for research. Professionally, she is the COVID 19 Case Management Specialist at the Zambia National Public Health Institute. And has been involved in mentorship in Advanced HIV Disease in the provinces, as well as management of pediatric patients.
Dr. Mbewe’s life goal is to develop a peer-derived network of researchers offering international solutions to locally common problems such as HIV, TB and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases.

Dr. Sharon Kapambwe is a global public health leader notable for co-leading the development and implementation of the national cervical cancer screening and prevention program in Zambia.
She is a Zambian trained medical doctor and obtained her master’s degree in Public Health from the Royal Tropical Institute in the Netherlands.
She is currently Technical Officer- Cancer for WHO Africa Region providing technical guidance, mobilising, and coordinating expertise to advise and build capacities of countries in the East and Southern Africa in the evidence-based prevention, care, and treatment services for targeted cancers.
Previously, she was the Assistant Director in the Ministry of Health in Zambia with overall national responsibility for cancer prevention for six years. She ably led the national cervical cancer screening program which has emerged as the largest ongoing initiative in the Sub-Saharan region and a best practice for low- income countries.
She worked as Director of Women’s Cancers at Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) doing research work and scaling up the cervical cancer prevention to the rest of the country for almost a decade until her secondment to the Ministry of Health.
She has over 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals mostly around cervical cancer in Zambia.
She is the immediate Past President for the Medical Women’s Association of Zambia where she was an investigator on the Case Series on Sexual Harassment of Female Doctors by Male Doctors in Zambia.

Dr. Jonathan Ikachana Sitali is the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Zambia College of Medicine and Surgery. He is a consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, an Honorary Lecturer of Orthopaedics and Trauma at the University of Zambia School of Medicine and is the immediate Past President of the Zambia Orthopaedics and Trauma Association. He is a member of the AO Alliance Steering Committee for English Speaking Africa and is a part – time lecturer of Public Health at the University of Lusaka since 2013. He has previously served in the Zambia Medical Association Executive Committee as Chair for Public Health (2013-15) and as Secretary General (2015 -17). Jonathan is passionate about teaching and capacity building for growth.
